How to Play Fields of Mistria: A Beginner's Guide

Fields of Mistria is a farming and life simulation game where you restore a magical town, farm crops, raise animals, explore mines, and befriend villagers. This guide explains the core mechanics and gives you a clear, ordered plan for your first week, so you know exactly what to do and what to prioritize.

The direct outcome of following this guide: by Day 8, you will have unlocked all starting tools, reopened the mines, earned enough renown to reach Stone rank, and established a reliable source of income.

Overview

Fields of Mistria combines classic farming-sim gameplay with a few twists. Here's what you need to know before you start:

  • Days are short (12.5 minutes). You can't do everything in one day. Plan for 1–2 main tasks per day.
  • Tools are unlocked gradually. You don't start with all tools. You'll get them through quests and purchases.
  • No friendship decay. You don't need to talk to every villager every day. Socializing is optional, not a chore.
  • Crafting benches are shared. Use the ones in town; they pull from your storage chest.
  • Renown unlocks progression. Earn it by selling items, completing quests, and donating to the museum to level up town prestige and earn rewards.

Requirements

Before you start, here's what you need to know about the game's starting conditions and early progression:

HoeFrom Celine and Hayden (story)Day 1
AxeCutscene with EilandDay 2

SpadeBuy from general store (500t)Anytime

Important: You can skip buying the worn fishing rod and spade. Instead, wait until you unlock the mines, collect copper, and craft copper tools directly. This saves 1,000t.

You'll also want to buy a bag upgrade (10 inventory slots to start) from the general store for 1,000t as soon as you can afford it.

Steps to Start Playing

Follow these steps in order for a smooth start.

Day 1: Farm and Explore

  1. Wake up and meet Celine and Hayden to get your watering can and hoe.
  2. Clear a small patch of your farm and plant the seeds you have.
  3. Water your crops. Don't worry about clearing the whole farm.
  4. Walk to the beach (southwest of your farm) and collect shells. They sell for about 20t each.
  5. Visit the Sleeping Dragon Inn and eat from the soup pot (restores 20 stamina, free).
  6. Go to sleep before 2:00 AM.

Failure recovery: If you run out of stamina, eat wild berries or other foraged food. If you pass out, you'll wake up at home with a small penalty, but you won't lose progress.

Day 2: Unlock Axe and Pickaxe

  1. Trigger Eiland's cutscene to get your axe.
  2. Visit the Quest Board (next to the general store) and accept "Do a Bro a Favor."
  3. Talk to Olric to get your pickaxe.
  4. Start chopping trees and breaking rocks on your farm to gather wood and stone.
  5. Check the Quest Board for any other available quests.

Failure recovery: If you miss the quest board on Day 2, the quests don't expire. You can pick them up any day.

Day 3–4: Save Money and Unlock Remaining Tools

  1. Continue farming and foraging. Sell shells and crops.
  2. On Day 4, accept "Something's Bugging Me" from the Quest Board and talk to Luc at the inn to get the bug net.
  3. Start catching bugs and fishing (if you bought the rod) to earn extra money.
  4. Save at least 1,000t for a bag upgrade.

Failure recovery: If you don't have enough money for the bag upgrade, prioritize it over buying the fishing rod and spade. You can craft copper tools later.

Day 5–7: Reach Stone Rank

  1. Keep selling items, completing quests, and donating to the museum.
  2. Focus on activities that generate renown: selling crops, completing quests, donating artifacts.
  3. At the end of Day 2, you'll have a dream visit from a dragon that teaches you about skills. Start leveling skills by doing activities (farming, mining, woodcutting, gathering, fishing).
  4. Use the Quest Board daily — quests never expire, so you can bank them and complete them when convenient.

Failure recovery: If you haven't reached Stone rank by Day 7, don't panic. The mines will still be there. Focus on selling high-value items and completing any pending quests.

Day 8: Reopen the Mines

  1. On Spring 6, you'll receive a letter starting the quest to reopen the mines.
  2. You need Stone rank to unlock them. Most players reach this by Day 8.
  3. Once open, explore the mines. The elevator is broken, so you'll use ladders.
  4. Every 5 floors, you'll find an elevator shaft — activate it to create a checkpoint for future visits.
  5. Aim for 5 floors per day, not 15–20. The days are short.

Failure recovery: If you can't reach Stone rank quickly, spend a day focused purely on selling and questing. The mines will be there when you're ready.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to do everything in one day. Days are only 12.5 minutes. Pick one main task per day.
  • Buying the worn fishing rod and spade. Wait and craft copper tools instead. You'll save 1,000t.
  • Ignoring the Quest Board. Quests are a reliable source of renown and rewards. Check it daily.
  • Not using free stamina recovery. The soup pot at the inn restores 20 stamina daily. There are also fountains you can unlock.
  • Feeding animals only hay and grass. You can feed animals almost any food, including wild berries and leftover crops. They'll produce beads either way.
  • Carrying eggs when near animals. Animals will eat eggs you're carrying, and you'll only get 1 bead for it.

Advanced Tips

Once you've got the basics down, these strategies will accelerate your progress.

Money-Making: The Growth Spell Trick

At the start of each season, find the regrowing crop that takes the longest to grow. Buy 9 seeds and plant them in a 3×3 square. Use the growth spell on them (unlocked through mining progression). This gives you an immediate harvest, and the crop will start regrowing faster.

Example: With wheat in fall, using this trick (and a mana potion to cover 18 plots) skipped the 9-day initial growth period. This resulted in 10 harvests that month instead of 7.

Cooking for Profit

Cooking is almost always profitable. Recipes sell for more than the cost of ingredients. Two perks make this even better:

  • Waste Not, Want Not: Sometimes returns the ingredients you used.
  • Dinner for Two: Sometimes duplicates the cooked dish.

Example chain: Farm wheat → mill it (increases price) → cook into bread (increases price again) → apply the perks for free extra product.

Stamina Recovery Locations

There are multiple free or cheap stamina recovery points:

LocationStamina RestoredRequirements
Soup pot at the Sleeping Dragon Inn20 (later 40)None
Fountain at the north end of the Eastern Road20Copper pickaxe to clear boulder
Fountain next to the fish shop (after fixing the beach bridge)20Repair bridge
Juniper's bathhouseFull refillCosts 100t (free visits unlockable via quests)

Animal Breeding and Colors

Animals have 6 tiers of colors, with 15 colors total. Check an animal's color tier in the menu. If you breed two animals of the same tier, you're guaranteed a baby one tier higher. If the parents are different tiers, there's only a chance of the higher tier.

Tier 6 colors are season-dependent — each season has a unique color.

Mines Speed Boost

If you have the tier 2 perk "Mine Time," you'll get a 10-second speed boost when reaching a new mine floor. To extend this boost outside the mines, take the elevator to another floor and then back to the top. The boost will persist briefly outside.

Wish Well and Chicken Statue

  • Wish Well (eastern road, behind a boulder): Donate 100 or 500 coins daily. The 500-coin option can yield unique recipes; the 100-coin option can yield hats.
  • Chicken Statue (Hayden's farm): Donate shiny beads from feeding/petting animals. You'll get random rewards — about 200t worth of materials for 10 beads, 2,000t for 100 beads. Don't just save for 100; there are unique recipes for 10-bead donations.
