Fields of Mistria: How to Cook (Step-by-Step Guide)
Learn how to cook in Fields of Mistria: where to find kitchens, how to get recipes, leveling tips, and the best skill perks to unlock.
Overview
Cooking in Fields of Mistria is a skill that lets you turn raw ingredients into meals with healing, stamina, and buff effects. You do not need to build a kitchen to start. You can use the Inn's free kitchen right away, then buy a personal kitchen later for convenience. This guide walks you through every step: where to cook, how to unlock recipes, how to level up fast, and which skill perks matter most.
Direct outcome: By the end of this guide, you will be able to cook your first dish within minutes of starting a new save, know exactly which kitchen to use at each stage, and have a clear path to reach Cooking Level 30.
Requirements
Before you start cooking, you need three things:
| Requirement | How to Get It | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A kitchen | Use the Inn's kitchen (free) or buy one from Ryis the Carpenter | The Inn kitchen is behind the bar on the ground floor |
| A recipe | Purchase from shops, complete quests, ship a crop for the first time, or find in mine chests | You start with the Bread recipe |
| Ingredients | Farm, forage, fish, or buy them | Match ingredients exactly to the recipe |
Kitchen tiers and what they unlock:
| Kitchen | Stars | Cooking Levels | Cost / Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner Kitchen | 1–2 star dishes | 0–19 | Purchased from Ryis |
| Cozy Kitchen | 1–3 star dishes | 0–39 | Purchased from Ryis |
| Adept Kitchen | All dishes | All levels | Purchased from Ryis (unlocks at higher level) |
| Inn Kitchen (early) | 1–2 star dishes | 0–19 | Free, behind the bar |
| Inn Kitchen (after "Upgrade The Inn" quest) | All dishes | All levels | Free after quest completion |
| Champion's Kitchen | All dishes | All levels | Crafted via Woodcrafting |
Ryis will send you a letter when a new kitchen tier becomes available at his shop. The Inn kitchen is the best free option regardless of your skill level — it never costs money and works for any dish once you upgrade the Inn.
Steps
Follow these steps in order to start cooking in Fields of Mistria.
Step 1: Go to a Kitchen
Your two early options:
- The Inn (recommended): Enter the Inn, go to the rear left of the ground floor behind the bar. Interact with the stove to open the cooking menu. This costs nothing and works from day one.
- Your Farmhouse: You can purchase a Beginner Kitchen from Ryis the Carpenter and place it in your farmhouse or on your farm. This costs money but keeps everything centralized.
Recovery tip: If you cannot interact with the stove, you are probably too far away. Walk closer until the interact prompt appears. If the menu does not open, make sure you have at least one recipe learned.
Step 2: Open the Cooking Menu
Approach the stove and press the interact button. The cooking menu opens with a list of recipes on the left side. Recipes are organized by category (Pantry, Snacks, Salads & Greens, Soups & Stews, Main Dishes, Desserts, Drinks).
Each recipe shows:
- Ingredients required
- Cook time
- Star quality (how many stars the dish can have)
- Required cooking level
- Required kitchen level
Step 3: Select a Recipe You Can Cook
You can only cook recipes that match both your cooking level and your current kitchen's star rating. For example, with a Beginner Kitchen (1–2 stars) and Cooking Level 5, you can cook:
- Bread (Level 6, 1 star) — not yet, you need Level 6
- Noodles (Level 1, 1 star) — yes
- Beet Salad (Level 1, 1 star) — yes
- Braised Carrots (Level 4, 1 star) — yes
Common failure: New players often try to cook a recipe that requires Cooking Level 2+ when they are still Level 1. The recipe will be grayed out or fail. Check the level requirement first.
Step 4: Confirm You Have the Ingredients
Open your inventory and verify you have every ingredient in the required quantity. Ingredients are consumed when you cook. If you are missing even one item, you cannot start the recipe.
Recovery tip: If you are missing ingredients, you can forage for wild items (berries, mushrooms), harvest crops, fish, or buy from town shops. Some ingredients like Sugar, Flour, Oil, and Butter are purchased from stores.
Step 5: Cook the Dish
Select the recipe and confirm. The cooking process takes real in-game time (shown on the recipe as minutes). During this time, you are committed to the cooking action. You cannot walk away mid-cook.
Recovery tip: If it is past midnight and you still need to cook, the "Time to Eat" perks (see Advanced Tips) reduce cook time. Otherwise, plan your cooking for earlier in the day.
Step 6: Collect Your Dish
When the timer finishes, the dish appears in your inventory or is automatically placed there. You can now:
- Eat it to restore HP and stamina
- Gift it to a villager
- Ship it for profit
- Feed it to your animals
Common Mistakes
These are the most frequent errors players make when learning how to cook in Fields of Mistria. Each includes a fix.
1. Trying to Cook Recipes Above Your Level
The mistake: Selecting a recipe that requires Cooking Level 20 when you are Level 5. The recipe either will not appear or will fail.
The fix: Always check the level requirement. Cook low-level dishes first (Noodles, Beet Salad, Braised Carrots, Baked Potato) to build experience before attempting higher-tier recipes.
2. Using the Wrong Kitchen for the Recipe
The mistake: A recipe requires a 3-star kitchen, but you only have a Beginner Kitchen (1–2 stars). The recipe will not cook.
The fix: Upgrade your kitchen by purchasing a Cozy Kitchen (1–3 stars) or Adept Kitchen (all stars) from Ryis. Alternatively, use the Inn kitchen after completing the "Upgrade The Inn" quest, which functions as an Adept Kitchen.
3. Neglecting Cooking Until Late Game
The mistake: Skipping cooking entirely until Summer or Fall, then struggling in the mines without stamina or speed buffs. One player reported being "absolutely struggling in the mines or barely making it home due to the lack of speed" after neglecting cooking until late Summer of Year 1.
The fix: Start cooking in Spring. Even simple dishes like Trail Mix (berries + water chestnuts) provide useful stamina restoration. Build the habit early.
4. Not Saving Eggs for Mass Cooking
The mistake: Selling or gifting all your eggs, then realizing you need dozens for bulk leveling.
The fix: If you plan to level Cooking by making Hard-Boiled Eggs, save your eggs. One player maxed the skill by cooking 87 Hard-Boiled Eggs, so stockpile aggressively.
5. Ignoring Recipe Sources
The mistake: Assuming you know all recipes and missing dishes that come from quests, shipping crops, or mine chests.
The fix: Ship every crop you grow at least once. Complete villager quests. Check the Saturday Market. Open chests in the mines. These are all confirmed recipe sources.
Advanced Tips
Once you understand the basics, these strategies will accelerate your Cooking skill and make your dishes far more useful.
Best Dishes for Fast Leveling (By Season)
| Season | Dish | Ingredients | Why It's Good |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Trail Mix | Berries + Water Chestnuts | Cheap, foraged ingredients, repeatable |
| Summer | Coconut Milk | Coconuts from the beach | Easy to gather in bulk |
| Anytime | Hard-Boiled Egg | 1 Egg | One player reached max level with 87 of these |
Cooking Skill Perks: What to Pick
The Cooking skill tree has three tiers. Here are the perks worth prioritizing:
Tier 1 (Levels 0–9):
- Waste Not, Want Not — Saves leftover ingredients you can reuse. Pairs perfectly with bulk cooking.
- Time to Eat — Cuts 10 minutes off cook time. Essential for late-night cooking sessions.
- Restorative Cooking — Occasionally produces HP and stamina-restoring dishes. Great for mine runs.
- Taste Maker — Recipes may drop from mine chests. Take this if you are a completionist or want rare recipes.
Tier 2 (Levels 10–19):
- Time to Eat 2 — Cuts 20 minutes off total cook time.
- Seasoned — Increases chances of finding uncommon or rare foraged items. Useful for quests and museum bundles.
- Award-Winning — Increases heart points when a dish is someone's liked gift.
- Likable Cooking — Occasionally produces dishes with the "likable" infusion, making them count as liked gifts even if the villager normally dislikes them.
Tier 3 (Levels 20–30):
- Time to Eat 3 — Cuts 30 minutes off total cook time.
- Dinner for Two — Occasionally creates an extra dish of whatever you cook. Free food to gift, ship, or eat.
- A Way to the Heart — Increases heart points from loved gift dishes.
- Speedy Cooking — Dishes may grant a speed boost. Extremely valuable for mining and getting home before midnight.
Best Perk Combinations
- Bulk Leveling: Waste Not, Want Not + Dinner for Two. You get ingredient refunds and bonus dishes, making 87 Hard-Boiled Eggs far cheaper.
- Mining: Restorative Cooking + Speedy Cooking. Heal while you mine and move faster between floors. Pair with the Hasty Blacksmithing perk (+4% armor) and the Mining perk that boosts speed on new floors for a "zooming through the mines" experience (player-reported).
- Socializing: Likable Cooking + A Way to the Heart. Turn neutral or disliked dishes into liked gifts, then boost heart gains further. Combine with the Farming perk "Living Off the Land" to occasionally get Strawberry Shortcake when harvesting strawberries — a loved gift for Eiland (player-reported).
The Inn Kitchen Is a Hidden Gem
The Inn kitchen is free and works for any dish once you complete the "Upgrade The Inn" story quest. Before that, it functions as a Beginner Kitchen. One player used it exclusively until upgrading to the Adept Kitchen "so everything was easy to get to and centralized in my house." If you are saving money, skip the Beginner and Cozy kitchens entirely and use the Inn until you can afford the Adept Kitchen.
Recipe Acquisition Checklist
- Ship every crop you grow at least once (unlocks recipe by mail)
- Complete villager quests (many reward recipes)
- Check the Saturday Market at Darcy's Stall
- Open wooden and copper chests in the mines
- Donate items to the Museum (some recipes are rewards)
- Purchase recipes from the Inn (e.g., Noodles for 150t, Grilled Cheese for 400t)
