Fields of Mistria: How to Fish – Full Guide

Learn how to fish in Fields of Mistria: buy the rod, cast, time your reel, dive for loot, and avoid common mistakes.

Overview

Fishing in Fields of Mistria is a core activity that lets you catch fish for cooking, gifting, and completing your museum collection. Unlike other tools, the fishing rod is not given to you at the start—you need to purchase it. This guide walks you through the entire process: getting the rod, finding fish, landing your catch, and using the diving mechanic.

Direct outcome: By following these steps, you'll be able to buy a fishing rod, catch your first fish, and understand the dive-based fishing system.

Requirements

Before you can start fishing, you need the following:

RequirementHow to Get ItCost
Fishing RodPurchase from Terithia's Tackle Shop at the Beach500 Tesserae (gold)
Access to the BeachLeave your farm (Mistgrove Farm) to the left, then head down toward the coastFree
StaminaRequired only when you successfully hook a fishVaries by fish size

Note: You can earn 500 Tesserae by completing the first two quests—most players reach this by Day 3 (community-reported). Alternatively, a Worn Fishing Rod can be crafted via Blacksmithing if you have the required ingots, though the exact recipe is not specified in available sources.

Steps: How to Fish

Step 1: Buy the Fishing Rod

  1. From your farm, head left and then down to reach the beach.
  2. Enter the small fish shop (Terithia's Tackle Shop).
  3. Walk up to the counter and press E to open the shop.
  4. Purchase the Worn Fishing Rod for 500 Tesserae.

Step 2: Equip the Rod

  • Open your action bar (hotbar) at the bottom of the screen.
  • Select the fishing rod—in the video guide, it was assigned to slot 7, but you can place it anywhere.
  • Your character will now hold the rod, ready to cast.

Step 3: Find a Fishing Spot

Look for dark grey oval shapes moving in the water. These are fish shadows. You can fish in:

  • The ocean
  • Rivers
  • Ponds
  • The town fountain
  • Even the Mines

Pro tip: For best results, aim your bobber directly on top of a fish or as close to it as possible.

Step 4: Cast Your Line

  • Face the water and hold down the Use Tool button (varies by platform).
  • A square outline will appear showing where your cast will land.
  • The outline changes color based on distance:
    • If the tile is not suitable for fishing, a red X appears and the cast fails.
    • If the tile is valid, release the button to cast.

Common mistake: If you cast too far, the fish may swim away. In the video guide, the player cast past the fish and lost it. Recast closer to the target.

Step 5: Wait for the Bite

Once your bobber lands, watch it carefully:

  1. A fish will swim toward your bobber.
  2. It may nibble several times—do not reel in yet. Reeling during nibbles scares the fish away.
  3. Wait for the exclamation point (!) to appear above the bobber.

Step 6: Reel In

  • The moment you see the exclamation point, click the Use Tool button.
  • Your character will reel in the catch.
  • A message appears showing the fish name, price, and description (first time only for each species).

Note: Success is influenced by your fishing skill level, selected perks (like Appealing Reeling), active buffs, and the difficulty of the fish itself.

Step 7: Collect Your Catch

The fish goes directly into your inventory. You can:

  • Sell it for Tesserae (e.g., a Sardine sells for 35 gold)
  • Cook with it in recipes
  • Gift it to villagers (note: Hayden hates fish)
  • Donate it to the museum if it's a museum item

Dive-Based Fishing

In addition to rod fishing, you can dive for items:

  1. Find a dark hole in the water.
  2. Walk to the edge of the water.
  3. Press forward + Space Bar to jump/dive in.
  4. Your character will duck underwater and emerge holding an item.

You can find items like seaweed, kelp, clams, crayfish, and sometimes treasure. Make sure you have inventory space before diving—the video guide shows a failed pickup due to a full inventory.

Advanced Tips

Fish Schools

Occasionally, fish will clump together in one spot. These are excellent targets because you can cast multiple times and catch a different species each time. Caution: Scaring a fish away causes the entire school to vanish.

Treasure Boxes

Occasionally you'll reel up treasure boxes instead of fish. These contain money and items:

  • Silver Treasure Box: Rare, contains money and items
  • Golden Treasure Box: Very rare, ~450 Tesserae, includes recipes like Sesame Tuna Bowl and Lobster Roll

Junk Items

Don't be discouraged if you catch junk (wood, glass, fiber, seaweed). These are normal and become less frequent with the Weedline Watcher perks. Seaweed sells for 15 gold and fiber is used in crafting.
