Fields of Mistria: How to Light the Dragon Forge
Learn how to light the Dragon Forge in Fields of Mistria, including the Magic Key quest steps, required items, and tips to avoid common mistakes.
Overview
Lighting the Dragon Forge in Fields of Mistria is part of the main story quest "Find the Magic Key." The forge sits on Floor 90 of the Ancient Ruins and cannot be used until you complete this quest. In short, you must use your Dragon's Breath magic on the forge, offer a Marigold and a Temple Flower at a tablet, grow a Seed of Balance, and harvest it to obtain the Magic Key.
This guide gives you the exact order of actions, the prerequisites you need, and what to do if you get stuck.
Requirements
Before you start, make sure you have:
- Dragon's Breath Magic Skill — This skill costs 2 mana to cast.
- At least 2 Mana — You need enough mana to cast Dragon's Breath on the forge. If you plan to speed up the plant growth later, you will need 2 more mana for a Growth spell.
- A Marigold and a Temple Flower — Both can be found in the Deep Woods, often near each other. They can also sometimes be purchased from Valor's Wagon.
- A Watering Can — You will need to water the Seed of Balance daily.
- Access to Floor 90 of the Ancient Ruins — You must have progressed through the mines to this floor.
Optional but helpful:
- Pink Mistral Pickaxe — A gold pickaxe cannot break the rocks blocking the northwest room on Floor 90. The Pink Mistral Pickaxe can. Its ore is mined from levels 80 and up. However, you can skip this room entirely because it only contains a hint. The hint is also found in the room south of the forge.
Steps to Light the Dragon Forge
Follow these steps in order.
1. Reach Floor 90 of the Ancient Ruins
Your quest objective will point you to Floor 90. Descend the mines until you reach this floor.
2. (Optional) Enter the Northwest Room for a Hint
The northwest room is blocked by rocks. A gold pickaxe will not break them, but a Pink Mistral Pickaxe will. This room contains a bookcase on the right side that gives you a hint about what to do.
Failure recovery: If you do not have the Pink Mistral Pickaxe, you can skip this room. The hint is not required to progress. The next room also provides the same information.
3. Use Dragon's Breath on the Forge
Head to the room south of the hint room. You will find the Dragon Forge there. Cast Dragon's Breath on it. This costs 2 mana.
Once lit, a path opens in the top right of the area.
4. Interact with the Tablet
Follow the newly opened path and interact with the tablet. It will give you a hint. Interact with it a second time to see exactly what you need to submit: a Marigold and a Temple Flower.
5. Obtain the Marigold and Temple Flower
Both flowers are found in the Deep Woods, usually close together. If you do not have them, head there to forage. Valor's Wagon is another possible source, though availability rotates.
6. Submit the Flowers
Return to the tablet and submit the Marigold and Temple Flower. You will receive a Seed of Balance.
7. Plant and Water the Seed of Balance
Head to the room south of the tablet. The dirt there is already tilled, so you can plant the seed immediately. You must water it every day.
- Water it for 4 consecutive days.
- On the 5th day, harvest it.
Speed-up option: If you have 2 mana, you can cast a Growth spell on the seed to speed up its growth. This is optional but saves time.
8. Harvest the Magic Key
The harvested plant yields the Magic Key. Take it and head to the center of the area. At the far north, you will find a door that the Magic Key unlocks. This leads to the Priestess Quarters.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to break the rocks with a gold pickaxe. A gold pickaxe cannot break the rocks in the northwest room. You need the Pink Mistral Pickaxe, or you can skip the room entirely.
- Running out of mana before using Dragon's Breath. The spell costs 2 mana. If you are short, eat food or rest to restore mana before attempting.
- Forgetting to water the Seed of Balance daily. Missing a day will delay the harvest. Set a reminder or check the plot each morning.
- Not interacting with the tablet twice. The first interaction only gives a hint. You must interact again to see the item submission requirements.
- Assuming the forge is usable immediately after lighting it. Lighting the forge is step one. The full quest must be completed before you can use the forge for crafting.
Advanced Tips
- Skip the hint room to save time. The northwest room only contains a hint that is repeated in the forge room. If you do not have the Pink Mistral Pickaxe, do not waste time mining for it just for this step.
- Stock up on mana-restoring items. Between casting Dragon's Breath and the optional Growth spell, you may need up to 4 mana total. Carry food or potions to restore mana quickly.
- Forage in the Deep Woods early. Marigolds and Temple Flowers are easy to miss if you are not looking for them. Grab them when you see them so you do not have to backtrack later.
- Plan your days around the seed. The Seed of Balance requires 4 days of watering. Start it on a day when you know you can return to the mines daily.
