Hardened Essence is a Rare Artifact in Fields of Mistria that belongs to the Dragon Set. You need it if you're working toward completing the Museum's Dragon Artifact Set, which requires one donation. It can also be gifted to villagers, with Juniper loving it and March disliking it.

The only confirmed way to obtain Hardened Essence is by exploring The Ancient Ruins section of The Mines. It drops rarely from Dig Spots when you use a pickaxe or shovel. If you've unlocked the Stoneturner skill, you can also find it by breaking rocks in the same area.

Requirements

Step 1: Reach the Ancient Ruins in The Mines

Head to The Mines and descend until you reach The Ancient Ruins section. This is the only location where Hardened Essence can spawn. If you're not sure which floor range this covers, check your map or progress through the mines until the environment changes to the ruins aesthetic.

Step 2: Scan for Dig Spots

Once inside the Ancient Ruins, look for Dig Spots on the ground. These appear as small mounds or disturbed patches of earth. They can be easy to miss, so move slowly and scan each floor thoroughly before moving on.

Step 3: Dig with Your Pickaxe or Shovel

Approach a Dig Spot and use either your pickaxe or shovel to dig it up. Each Dig Spot has a chance to yield Hardened Essence, but the drop rate is rare. You'll likely find other artifacts or items instead, which is normal.

Step 4: Break Rocks if You Have Stoneturner

If you've unlocked the Stoneturner skill, break any rocks you encounter while exploring the Ancient Ruins. These can also drop Hardened Essence, giving you a second source in the same area. This is especially useful if you've cleared all the Dig Spots on a floor.

Step 5: Clear the Floor and Repeat

Work through every Dig Spot and breakable rock on the current floor. If you don't find Hardened Essence, descend to the next floor and repeat the process. The artifact can appear on any floor within the Ancient Ruins, so thorough coverage is your best strategy.

Step 6: Revisit on Later Days

If you've cleared the entire Ancient Ruins section without success, leave The Mines and return on a new in-game day. Dig Spots and rocks reset, giving you a fresh batch of chances. Persistence is key since the drop rate is intentionally low.

• Skipping Dig Spots — Because the drop rate is rare, you might be tempted to skip spots that look like they'll only yield common items. Don't. Every Dig Spot has a chance to produce Hardened Essence.
