Fields of Mistria: How to Get the Fishing Rod
Learn how to get the fishing rod in Fields of Mistria. Find the Tackle Shop, save 500 Tesserae, and start fishing with this complete early-game guide.
Overview
The fishing rod in Fields of Mistria is not handed to you like your other starting tools. You must purchase it from the Tackle Shop on the beach for 500 Tesserae. The rod you buy is the Worn Fishing Rod, the starter-tier tool with a cast range of 6 tiles and a sell price of 250 Tesserae.
You can realistically afford this rod by the morning of Day 3 if you complete your first two quests and sell the right items. Once purchased, you can immediately begin fishing in the ocean, in fish schools, and by diving into underwater holes.
Requirements
Before you can buy the fishing rod, you need:
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| 500 Tesserae | The exact price of the Worn Fishing Rod at the Tackle Shop |
| Access to the Beach | Leave your farm (Mist Grove Farm) heading left, then continue down to the beach |
| Tackle Shop unlocked | The shop is open during normal business hours; walk inside and interact with the counter |
| Action bar slot | After purchase, assign the rod to a hotbar slot (default key 7) to equip it |
The rod is sold by Terithia at her Tackle Shop located directly on the beach. You do not need to complete any story quests to unlock the shop itself—just walk in and buy the rod once you have the gold.
Steps to Get the Fishing Rod
Step 1: Earn 500 Tesserae
Complete the first two quests you receive at the start of the game. Based on player experience, these quests provide enough gold to purchase the rod by Day 3. If you fall short, sell foraged items, fish, or crops from your farm to make up the difference.
Step 2: Travel to the Beach
From your farm at Mist Grove Farm, head left out of the farm area, then continue down toward the beach. The path is straightforward and takes less than a minute to walk.
Step 3: Enter the Tackle Shop
Once on the beach, locate the small fish shop building. Walk inside and approach the counter.
Step 4: Purchase the Worn Fishing Rod
Press the interaction key (default E) to open the shop menu. Select the Worn Fishing Rod for 500 Tesserae. Confirm the purchase and the rod will be added to your inventory.
Step 5: Equip the Rod
Open your inventory and assign the rod to an action bar slot. The default slot for tools is 7 on your hotbar. Select it to hold the rod in your hands.
Step 6: Start Fishing
Walk to the edge of any body of water. Look for visible fish shadows or ripples in the water. Line yourself up with a fish and click to cast the rod. When the bobber dips and an exclamation mark (!) appears, left-click immediately to hook the fish.
Common Mistakes
Casting Too Far
If you cast the rod beyond the fish's position, the fish will disappear and you will need to recast. Always aim so the bobber lands near the fish, not directly on it or past it.
Missing the Exclamation Mark Window
The bite window is brief. The fish will nibble the bobber first, then commit with an exclamation mark. If you click too early or too late, you miss the catch. Timing takes practice—expect to miss several fish before your first successful hook.
Not Saving Enough Gold
The rod costs exactly 500 Tesserae. If you spend gold on other items early, you will delay your fishing rod purchase. Prioritize saving for the rod if fishing is your goal.
Forgetting to Equip the Rod
Buying the rod does not automatically equip it. You must assign it to your hotbar and select it before you can cast. Pressing the wrong hotbar slot will leave you with another tool equipped.
Advanced Tips
Use the Rod's Full Cast Range
The Worn Fishing Rod has a cast range of 6 tiles, measured from your position. This is the shortest range of any rod in the game. Stand as close to the water's edge as possible to maximize your effective reach. Upgraded rods (Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, Mistril) extend this range, but the Worn Rod is sufficient for early-game fishing.
Fish in Schools for Multiple Catches
Schools of fish visible in the water allow you to catch multiple fish in a row without recasting. Cast into the school and reel in successive catches. This is the fastest way to earn gold from fishing early on.
Dive for Underwater Items
Beyond standard fishing, you can dive into the water by pressing forward and the space bar at the water's edge. Underwater, look for glowing spots or holes to collect seaweed, kelp, and other items. Ensure you have inventory space before diving, or you will miss the pickup.
Sell Your First Catches
A common fish like the Sardine sells for 35 gold. Early catches add up quickly. Sell your first few fish to build a gold reserve for future upgrades, tools, or seeds.
