Fields of Mistria Fishing Rod: How to Get, Use, and Upgrade

Overview

The Fields of Mistria fishing rod is not given to you like your other starting tools. You must purchase it. The first rod you can get is the Worn Fishing Rod, which costs 500 Tesserae and is sold at the Tackle Shop on the beach in Mistria.

Once you have it, you can cast into any body of water to catch fish. The Worn Fishing Rod has a cast range of 6 tiles, which is the shortest range of any rod in the game. This guide covers exactly how to get it, equip it, and start catching fish without wasting your time or Tesserae.

Requirements

Before you can buy the fishing rod, you need:

• 500 Tesserae — You can earn this by completing the first two quests. One player reported having enough gold to buy the rod on the morning of Day 3 after finishing those quests.
• Access to the beach — From Mist Grove Farm, head left and then down to reach the beach.
• The Tackle Shop must be open — Terithia runs the shop inside the fish shop building on the beach.

No fishing skill level or prior tools are required. You just need the gold and access to the shop.

How to Get the Fishing Rod

Follow these steps to get your first fishing rod in Fields of Mistria:

1. Travel to the beach from your farm. Head left out of Mist Grove Farm, then continue down to the beach area.
2. Enter the fish shop on the beach. It is a small building near the water.
3. Walk up to the counter and press E to open the shop menu.
4. Buy the Worn Fishing Rod for 500 Tesserae. It will go directly into your inventory.

That is the only way to get the starter rod. It is not awarded through quests or found in chests. If you do not have 500 Tesserae yet, complete a few more early quests or sell foraged items to make up the difference.

How to Equip and Use the Fishing Rod

Once purchased, the rod appears in your inventory. Here is the full casting and catching sequence:

1. Select the rod from your action bar. It will be assigned to a slot automatically; press the corresponding number key to equip it.
2. Find fish in the water. Look for visible fish shadows or movement in the ocean, rivers, or ponds.
3. Line up your cast. Position yourself so the fish is within your rod's range. The Worn Fishing Rod has a short range, so get close to the water's edge.
4. Cast by left-clicking. Aim near the fish, not directly on top of it. If you cast too far past the fish, you will miss it.
5. Wait for the bobber to dip. When a fish approaches, the bobber will move and nibble. Watch for an exclamation mark above the bobber.
6. Click immediately when you see the exclamation mark. This is the catch window. Timing matters — clicking too early or too late causes the fish to escape.
7. Collect your catch. The fish goes straight into your inventory, and you can see its name and sell value in the catch confirmation.

Common Mistakes and How to Recover

Over-casting Past the Fish

If you cast too far, the bobber lands beyond the fish and the fish swims away. Pull the rod back and recast closer to the fish. Do not waste time waiting on a bad cast.

Missing the Exclamation Mark

The catch window is short. If you miss it, the fish nibbles and leaves. This is not a failure — just recast in the same spot. One player noted it took three attempts before their first successful catch. Treat each miss as practice for timing.

Fishing in the Wrong Spots

Not every area of water has fish. Look for visible fish movement or schools of fish before casting. If nothing bites after a few seconds, move to a different spot.

Running Out of Inventory Space

Caught fish and diving finds go straight to your inventory. If your inventory is full, you cannot pick up new items. Check your inventory before fishing, especially if you plan to dive as well.

Advanced Tips

Use Schools of Fish

You can cast into schools of fish the same way you cast into open water. Fishing in a school lets you catch multiple fish in a row without moving. This is the most efficient way to farm fish once you find a school.

Dive for Extra Finds

Some water areas have diving spots marked by bubbles or holes. Walk to the edge of the water, press forward and the space bar to jump in, then dive to collect items like seaweed or kelp. These are not fish, but they add to your income and collection.

Upgrade Your Rod Later

The Worn Fishing Rod is the starter option. You can upgrade to better rods at the Smithy or purchase improved rods at the fishing shack on the beach. Upgraded rods increase your cast range, letting you reach fish that the starter rod cannot. The wiki lists Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, and Mistril rods as higher-tier options.

Watch Your Timing, Not Just the Bobber

The exclamation mark is your cue. Some players find it easier to click when the bobber dips sharply rather than waiting for the mark. Test both cues and use whichever gives you a more consistent catch rate.
