Fields of Mistria Chicken Guide: Raising, Breeding & Colors

Overview

Chickens are the first livestock you can raise in Fields of Mistria. They require only a Coop to get started — no other unlock conditions apply. This guide walks you through the entire chicken lifecycle: buying your first birds, feeding them efficiently, breeding for new colors, and working toward the rare Tier 6 seasonal variants.

Requirements

Before you can own chickens, you need three things: money, a Coop blueprint, and building materials.

You can buy chickens at any time from Hayden's Shop after building a Coop. There are no additional unlock requirements.

Recommended starting purchase: Buy two Tier 1 chickens — one male and one female — in different colors (Brown and Spotted). This gives you the foundation for breeding Tier 2 colors immediately.

Steps

Step 1: Build Your Coop

Head to the Carpenter northeast of your farm and purchase the Coop blueprint for 1,500 Tesserae. You'll also need 75 Wood and 50 Stone to construct it.

Clear space on your farm, place the blueprint from your inventory, and build. The standard Coop houses four animals. At Ranching level 20, you can unlock an upgraded Coop that houses eight.

Step 2: Buy Your First Chickens

Travel west to Hayden's Ranch. Purchase one male and one female chicken. Choose different colors if you plan to breed for new colors.

If you have spare money, consider buying toys for your chickens to play with outside — these are cosmetic but add charm to your farm.

Step 3: Daily Care Routine

Chickens need three things daily:

1. Feed them — either from your inventory or by letting them outside to eat grass and berries
2. Pet them — increases their heart level with you
3. Let them outside on good weather days

Feeding shortcuts:

• Clear weeds on your farm to get chicken feed
• Grow berry bushes outside — chickens will eat them directly
• Feed them their own eggs if you have surplus
• Higher-quality crops produce more Shiny Beads when eaten

Missing a day of feeding or petting won't degrade your relationship — hearts simply stop increasing. You can check heart levels anytime from the animal details menu.

Step 4: Reach Breeding Readiness

Chickens mature in 3 days. Once mature, both parents need 2 hearts before they can breed.

Check heart levels in the animal menu. If you have the "Welcome Home" skill from the Ranching tree, newborn or purchased animals may start with 1–2 hearts already.

Step 5: Breed for New Colors

1. Ensure you have free space in your Coop for a baby
2. Buy two chicken treats from Hayden's Ranch farm supplies
3. Give one treat to the female and one to the male
4. Wait 4 days for the baby to be born
5. On the day-end screen, you'll see the baby's color, gender, and naming prompt

Breeding tier progression:

• Tier 1 + Tier 1 = Tier 2 (common)
• Tier 1 + Tier 2 = Tier 3 (rare)
• Tier 2 + Tier 2 = Tier 3 (reliable)
• Tier 5 + Tier 5 = Tier 6 (rare, not guaranteed)

Step 6: Unlock and Purchase New Colors

Once you've bred a new color, that color becomes available for purchase at Hayden's Ranch. This is the fastest way to get the opposite gender you need for further breeding.

For example, if you keep breeding Brown and Spotted chickens but keep getting females, buy a male in the new Tier 2 color you unlocked instead of breeding again.

Common Mistakes

Buying two of the same gender. You cannot breed without one male and one female. Always check before purchasing.

No free Coop space. Breeding requires an empty slot. If your Coop is full, move chickens to daycare at Hayden's Ranch (free) or sell spares.

Breeding before 2 hearts. Animals below 2 hearts won't breed. Pet them daily until they reach the threshold.

Expecting Tier 6 from Tier 5 + Tier 5. This is the most common frustration. Breeding two Tier 5 gold chickens usually produces another Tier 5, not a Tier 6 seasonal. It's rare and requires repeated attempts.

Forgetting to check the tier. Always verify the tier of your animals in the menu before breeding. Breeding a Tier 1 with a Tier 2 gives you a Tier 3 only rarely — you're better off breeding two Tier 2s for reliability.

Assuming yellow chickens exist as a separate color. There is no "yellow" chicken tier in the color list. The closest match is the Gold chicken at Tier 5. If you're searching for a yellow chicken, you're likely looking for the Gold variant.

Advanced Tips

Recovering from Breeding Deadlocks

The most common failure point is getting the same gender repeatedly. Here's the recovery sequence:

1. Check what you have — open the animal menu and note genders and tiers
2. Visit Hayden's Ranch — the color you've unlocked is now purchasable
3. Buy the missing gender in the unlocked color (costs 1,200 Tesserae for Tier 2)
4. Move excess animals to daycare — free storage at Hayden's Ranch
5. Breed the pair — now you have matching tiers and opposite genders

This sequence breaks the loop of breeding the same two Tier 1s and getting the same gender every time.

Working Toward Tier 6 Seasonal Chickens

Tier 6 chickens are seasonal — Spring and Fall variants exist. The season you give the breeding treats determines the seasonal variant, not the birth season. For example, giving treats in Spring produces a Spring chicken even if the baby is born in Summer.

Important: Tier 5 + Tier 5 does not guarantee a Tier 6. Player experience reports that most Tier 5 pairings yield another Tier 5. Expect to breed repeatedly through the month until you get lucky.

Maximizing Produce Quality

At 8 hearts, chickens have a chance to produce Golden Eggs (females) or Golden Feathers (males). At 10 hearts, this becomes guaranteed.

Using Shiny Beads

When chickens eat high-quality crops outside, they drop Shiny Beads. Donate these to the Chicken Statue next to Hayden's Ranch for rewards including dishes, recipes, high-quality produce, and animal decorations.

Letting Chickens Self-Feed

Grow berry bushes in your pasture. Chickens will eat them directly, reducing your daily feeding workload. Higher-quality crops produce more Shiny Beads, so prioritize quality over quantity.
